Birth doula support, birth photography, and more in Minneapolis and St. Paul

April Favorites: Our Current Obsessions

The fourth month of 2021 is over, and what a month it was. Once again, we found ourselves spending time calling and writing our representatives, redistributing funds to our neighbors in Brooklyn Center, and taking to the streets. If you would like to show your support, we’ve linked some mutual aid opportunities below.

Whether you’re hoping to find your new nightly read or just looking for a new binge-worthy series on Netflix, we think you’re in the right place. Consider this a recap of everything that made our month brighter.

In the time that has passed since we shared our March Favorites, we’ve added a lot of fresh new content to the blog! We started the month off with a beautiful water birth at home in Ellsworth, WI. Next, we shared a list of our favorite books for fertility to parenting. We continued our home birth streak with a speedy third time birth that made us smile from ear-to-ear. Being a working parent can be hard, which is why we happily passed on our hacks for pumping. We’re proud to say that our work was included in not one, but two phenomenal places this month: a video by Vice President Kamala Harris announcing action for Black Maternal Health Week, and as a winner for Everyday Birth’s awards, which will be included in their latest print publication. Gina shared her personal thoughts and advice on the importance of self care as a parent. We rounded out April recognizing Cesarean Awareness Month with a gallery of our favorite Gather cesarean images.

Reading:

For the third spring in a row, Brooke is reading Braiding Sweetgrass - the perfect book to accompany any gardener. Emily has been blazing through memoirs, and a couple of her favorites have been Maybe You Should Talk To Someone and Finding Freedom. Gina has been digging into several books to support both her family and future Gather families: The Whole Brain Child, The Orchid and The Dandelion, and Raising Good Humans.

Watching:

Emily says that re-watching Schitt's Creek while on the exercise bike has been awfully fun. Meredith spent most of the month laying low at home as she navigated a miscarriage. Below Deck was her constant companion. Gina and her husband got deep in to several docuseries, including This is a Robbery on Netflix and Sasquatch on Hulu. They also watch Falcon and The Winter Soldier, so apparently they’re Marvel fans now?

Eating:

Emily keeps coming back to this recipe, adding chickpeas for her vegetarian husband and some sweet pepper drops as a garnish to level up to perfection. Gina shared one of her favorite recipes with Mere this month, the Ginger Chicken Meatballs from Ambitious Kitchen.

Doing:

Brooke spent the month attending a few births for Gather and managing our inbox, but now she’s getting ready for a month off-call: house projects, camping, and getting my seedlings in the ground. Emily’s kids have been digging The Beatles recently; they’ve spent more than a few afternoons dancing around the living room to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Her family also recently added kayaks to their growing fleet of outdoor activities. Gina has spent more time curating her summer playlist, including Peach Fuzz by Caamp. She’s currently anticipating and fearing putting in new raised garden beds in her front yard.

What about you? What were your April bright spots?
