Born at Home in Minneapolis, Minnesota: A Preview of a Midwife Supported Home Birth in Photographs

Welcome to the world, sweet girl! We’re so glad you’re here.

As you scroll through this birth story, you’ll notice a series of positions and techniques it can sometimes take to support a baby who is OP (occipital posterior position, often referred to as “sunny side up”) in labor. Fetal positioning, especially that of OP babies, can cause quite the commotion in birth, from stalls or longer labors to the all-too-common back labor many folks experience.

You’ll see this parent birthing in the pool for comfort and to relax their muscles, followed by a few things that seemed to help turn their baby for a very swift arrival soon after: abdominal lift and tucks, side lying release, Walcher’s position in the pool, a chiropractic adjustment, an amazing sense of humor between contractions, a bit of patience, and a knowledgable midwife to help support all the above. If you just read that list and thought lift, side, Walch, what?! Gilligan’s Guide can be an amazing tool for navigating these waters (pun very much intended).

This family’s birth team included North Star Midwifery, birth support from loved ones and Sunshine Mama Doula Care, and birth photography by Gather Birth Cooperative.
