Fresh 48 | A Momtog Captures Her Family of Four at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood, MN

We absolutely adore the innocence and temporary stillness that hangs around families in the first few days of a baby’s life. This amazing little bubble is one of the many reasons we love documenting Fresh 48 stories for new families in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding Minnesota suburbs. Some families have their Fresh 48 photography captured at the hospital, while they’re still in the labor and delivery wing. Families who have their babies at birth centers or a home birth typically have their Fresh 48 sessions at home, though it’s a really cozy option for hospital families as well!

This Fresh 48 story is extra special, because it’s a gorgeous gallery from our Gather Birth co-founder Emily, lovingly taken of her new son and her family. Was she delicately told by family and friends (many of whom are also professional photographers) she should rest and let others step in? Absolutely. But when your passion is photography and your family is as beautiful as hers, we don’t blame her at all for needing to snap these intimate images. And we must admit, there is something even more gorgeous about these photos knowing they were taken by the mother herself.

Would we recommend any person take their own Fresh 48 photos? Not really. If you don’t have a decade plus of professional photography experience like Emily, you’ll likely be a bit disappointed with the results. Plus, it’s really nice to have photos of yourself in your photo gallery documenting those first few days. From every little baby wrinkle, to your tired and joyful smile, those moments are all worth saving. Our Gather Birth photographers take care to not interrupt you during your Fresh 48 session. Need to pause for a feeding? No worries. Not really feeling like getting out of bed? Don’t worry, we’ll still make sure you look amazing. The Gather team always has your back (and now your baby’s).
